Some Bob Marley facts for you too

If you need a little extra reading for your grey matter on Bob Marley’s birthday, then we have some Bob Marley facts for you too…

When was Bob Marley born?

Bob Marley was born on the 6th of February in 1945. Bob was originally named Robert Nesta Marley, but as we all know he went by the name of Bob!

Where was Bob Marley born?

Our man Bob was born in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish in Jamaica… Nine Mile is also where Bob was buried after his death on the 11th of May, 1981. There is a Bob Marley Mausoleum in Nine Mile commemorating the life and achievements of our beloved Bob Marley.

Incidentally, the Parish of Saint Ann is also where a number of other notable Reggae artists came from, including Floyd LloydBurning SpearBusy SignalBryan ArtRomain VirgoChezidekShabba RanksJustin Hinds, and Perfect.

Marcus Garvey, one of seven Jamaican National Heroes, was also born there.

How did Bob Marley die?

Bob Marley was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma (a form of skin cancer below the nail on his big toe) in July of 1977. Rather than having his big toe amputated (due to his Rastafarian beliefs) Bob opted for the removal of his toenail and a skin graft from his thigh to cover the area.  Sadly while on tour in September of 1980, he discovered that the cancer had metastasized throughout his body and into his brain. Marley stopped his tour short and underwent an 8-month programme of alternative cancer therapy called Issels treatments in Bavaria. Sadly his disease was too far advanced and on his way home to Jamaica his health deteriorated further and the plane landed in Miami and was taken to hospital where he later died.

Bob Marley’s last words were to his son Ziggy Marley… “Money can’t buy life.”

Bob Marley died on 11 May 1981 in Miami at the age of 36. A tragic loss to us all…

It’s a little sad to be thinking about the passing of Bob Marley on his birthday, but we can feel happy that we still have his music to soothe our souls…

There are so many great Bob Marley and the Wailers songs that we couldn’t include them all… There are also a ridiculous number of cover songs and fan versions out there too, so we stopped when we felt we’d made our point… Of course, there are loads of songs missing from this list so please add your favourites below in the comment section…
