Pizza Hut’s creepy self-driving delivery vehicle is just like the one in Black Mirror
On Monday (Jan. 8), Toyota unveiled its immediate plans to enter the world of self-driving cars with vehicles called “e-Palettes.” They’re essentially big rooms on wheels which can be turned into mobile offices, retail stores, hotel rooms, and more.
CEO Akio Toyoda introduced the e-Palette fleet of vehicles, strangely enough, by asking how automated drivers could change Burning Man. “We can quickly create a mobile hub for services from medical clinics to entertainment and festivals,” said Toyoda.
Toyota’s first legion of e-Palettes will be put in service for a list of familiar names. These e-Palettes will provide driverless services for Uber (oh no) and Amazon (oh noooooo). Of the initial partnerships, one that stands out is America’s favorite acne provider: Pizza Hut.

“We are focused on technology-based solutions that enable our team members and drivers to deliver even better customer experiences,” said Pizza Hut president Artie Starrs in a statement. “With Toyota, we are excited to be partnering with an undisputed leader in human mobility with a reputation for innovation, reliability and efficiency, as we define the pizza delivery experience of the future.”
Pizza Hut is not shy about innovation. Recently, they’ve allowed their stuffed crusts and whatever that apple strudel thing is called to be ordered over Amazon’s voice-activated Alexa devices. But Pizza Hut isn’t the only way to see futuristic pizza drones. Black Mirror just proposed the same dang thing.
The Black Mirror episode “Crocodile” is centered around memory recording devices, the right to privacy and MURDER MOST FOUL. One of the major plot devices in the episode is a pizza delivery drone which bonks a pedestrian, initiating an insurance claim investigation. So beware, murderous architects, the gears are all in motion now.
